What are the benefits of Guarana?

What are the benefits of Guarana?

Sustained energy throughout the day, sharper focus, easier training, and a dose of protective antioxidants — the research behind the Amazonian seed in every serving of ATHANASE®.

The Sateré-Mawé people of Brazil have used Guarana to reduce fatigue, sharpen the mind and push through hunger on their long journeys. Modern research now points to four benefits: sharper focus and faster reactions; better training output that makes hard work feel easier; and a dose of protective antioxidants for health. Below, we break down what the evidence suggests, and where it fits into a real life.

Men today are working harder for less. Longer hours, higher costs, thinner margins for error — and on top of that, testosterone in Western men has fallen by roughly 1% a year since the 1980s, and men carry the heaviest end of nearly every grim statistic, from workplace deaths to suicide. What this means is every man needs every competitive edge he can find — to train, to provide, to lead, and to keep working hard without burning out. Guarana is one of those small competitive edges.

Sustained Energy
Naturally occurring caffeine with a slower, smoother release — less of the spike-and-crash

Focus & Reactions
Human trials link guarana to improved alertness and faster reaction time

Training Output
Lower perceived effort and supported high-intensity capacity in controlled studies

Antioxidants
Rich in polyphenols — the same protective family found in green tea and cacao

What is Guarana?

Guarana (Paullinia cupana) is a woody Amazonian shrub. Its roasted seeds are one of the most caffeine-dense plant materials on earth — somewhere between roughly 2% and 6% caffeine by weight, compared with around 1–3% in a coffee bean[1][2]. Brazil grows the overwhelming majority of the world's supply.

📊 Caffeine Density — Guarana Seed vs Coffee Bean

Caffeine content as a percentage of dry weight. Guarana seed is among the most caffeine-dense plant materials known. Ranges from: Schimpl et al., J Ethnopharmacology 2013[1]; Marques et al., Rev Bras Farmacogn 2019[2].

It also contains the following 'caffeine-like' compounds:

The Wider Compound Profile

  • Theobromine and theophylline — gentler "cousins" of caffeine found in cocoa and tea[2].
  • Tannins — natural plant compounds that bind to the caffeine.
  • Catechins and proanthocyanidins — the same family of antioxidant polyphenols that make green tea and dark chocolate popular[2][9].

That combination is the key to guarana's reputation. The caffeine is thought to be bound up with the tannins, which many researchers believe slows its release, giving a smoother, longer-lasting lift rather than the sharp spike-and-crash of a strong espresso[1][2]. The science here isn't fully settled, so treat it as a plausible mechanism rather than gospel — but it lines up with what a lot of people report: energy that builds and holds, instead of hitting and suddenly crashing.

Energy that builds and holds, instead of hitting and suddenly crashing.

1. Sustained Energy and Feeling Less Tired

This is guarana's headline act, and it's the best-supported. Fighting fatigue is what the Amazonian peoples used it for, and modern research supports this.

Guarana has been studied for its anti-fatigue effects in populations under serious physical stress, where reviews of the controlled trials have found it meaningfully reduces fatigue[8]. If it can move the needle there, the case for a healthy man using it to power through a heavy training week or a long working day is easy to understand.

The mechanism is partly the caffeine, and likely the wider cocktail of compounds working together. Either way, the practical translation is simple: more usable energy, with less of the wired-then-flat feeling you get from slamming a double espresso.

2. Sharper Focus and Faster Reactions

Several human trials have tested guarana on the brain, not just the body. In studies, modest doses of guarana extract improved memory and alertness in healthy adults and, notably, at caffeine doses too low to explain the effect on their own, hinting that the other compounds do pull their weight[3][4].

A 2023 review pulling together the controlled studies found guarana reliably speeds up reaction time[6]. For anyone who relies on quick decision-making under pressure — for example competitive athletes in the ring, on the pitch, in the boardroom, behind a chessboard — faster reactions and steadier alertness are exactly the edge you want.

3. Better Training Output and Lower Perceived Effort

This is where it gets interesting for athletes. Some of the most useful findings aren't about raw power — they're about how hard the work feels.

In a controlled trial, an active supplement containing guarana produced a small but significant drop in rating of perceived exertion during running, meaning the same effort felt easier[11]. In young footballers, a dose of guarana improved high-intensity intermittent running capacity[10]. And caffeine itself is one of the most reliably proven performance aids in all of sports science, shown across decades of research to improve endurance and reduce fatigue[7].

Lower perceived effort means you can train harder for longer before the voice inside your head tells you to stop. Over weeks and months, that compounds to more gains and a more successful career.

4. Antioxidant Health Benefits

Guarana is rich in polyphenols, and the antioxidant data is legitimately strong. Human studies have shown its 'catechins' are absorbed and are linked to improved activity of the body's own antioxidant defence enzymes[9]. Other research in older adults associated regular guarana intake with markers of reduced oxidative stress[10].

In plain layman terms: alongside the energy, you're getting a dose of the same class of protective plant compounds that make foods like green tea and cacao worth eating.

What This Looks Like in Real Life

The research is one thing. Here's how it actually plays out across a normal week as a man:

The Early Shift After a Bad Night's Sleep

You've got an early start and not enough sleep. Instead of pounding multiple coffees and crashing in the early afternoon, guarana's slower-release lift carries you through the morning more evenly.

The Training Session

Taken before you train, guarana has been shown to make the same effort feel easier and to support high-intensity output[11][10] — often the difference between showing up the way you want to, or just going through the motions.

The 3pm Wall at Work

Long hours, back-to-back demands, and that mid-afternoon slump where focus falls off a cliff. This is exactly where guarana's edge on alertness and reaction time earns its keep[3][6] — you stay sharp through the part of the day that usually beats you.

The Double Shift of Modern Life

Job, training, family, side hustle. Most men aren't choosing just one — they're carrying all of it. A steady source of energy that doesn't spike-and-crash is a practical tool for the man who has more to do than hours to do it in.

Used sensibly, that's the role guarana plays: not a miracle, but a reliable hand on the days the world asks more of you than usual — which, lately, is most of them.

A Word on Caffeine — and Why "Small but Smart" Matters

Because guarana is so caffeine-dense, the dose and form matter. Raw guarana seed powder contains far less caffeine per gram than a concentrated extract, which is why a thoughtfully formulated product uses it for a measured lift rather than a jittery overload.

ATHANASE® contains 500mg of guarana per serving as part of its blend — enough to contribute that signature sustained energy and a modest amount of naturally occurring caffeine and caffeine-like compounds, without the wired feeling of a hammer-blow pre-workout. It's there to support you through training and the day, not to keep you up at night.

⚠️ Sensible Use

For reference, food-safety authorities consider up to 200mg of caffeine in one go, and up to 400mg across a day, to be fine for most healthy adults[12][13]. Guarana is also recognised as safe at sensible doses and has a clean track record[13]. Common sense still applies: if you're sensitive to caffeine, pregnant or breastfeeding, or you have a heart condition or anxiety, keep an eye on your total daily intake from all sources and speak to your doctor.

Why Guarana Sits Inside ATHANASE®

On its own, guarana is a smart natural energiser. In ATHANASE®, the 500mg of guarana sits alongside maca root and 14 other carefully chosen ingredients, formulated so that the energy, focus and antioxidant support complement the rest of the blend rather than fighting it. Guarana brings the spark; the wider formula is built for the man who trains hard, works hard and intends to keep doing both for decades.

That's the point of it. Not a quick hit. A foundation.
